Desogen

Maybe Desogen suits you better for Preventing Pregnancy?

Desogen is a combination of female hormones (see also Alesse) that work to prevent ovulation (egg release) from a woman’s ovary. Taking the contraceptive pill, Desogen, will also thin the lining of the uterus and alter the mucous at the neck of the cervix. If, by chance ovulation does happen then a little sperm inside a woman who is on a course of Desogne is going find it extremely difficult to make contact with her uterus. In the unlikely event of a tough little swimmer (sperm) managing to fertilize an egg, he’s going to have a big shock when that little fertilized egg tries to bed down into the wall of a ‘not so comfortable’ uterus (due to the thinning of the lining that Desogen causes).
This is why Desogen is one of the most effective birth control pills.

What are effects I may feel when taking Desogen?

Only a few users have any problems taking Desogen but you should monitor yourself carefully after starting your first course of pills to determine if you are one of them or not. Every woman’s body is unique in the way it reacts to any medication- even over the counter medications- and the contraceptive pill is no different.

Some women have reported allergic reactions that include:

  • difficulty in breathing, hives and swelling on the face, throat, tongue or lips
  • weakness or numbness in the body at sides
  • severe migraine headache
  • breast lump, swelling in the feet, hands or ankles,
  • insomnia, depression, mood swings, low appetite, jaundice, and chest pain

Hopefully you will not have any side effects at all but should you experience any of the above side effects, stop taking Desogen at once and have a chat to your doctor about maybe changing over to one of the other contraceptive pills reviewed here.
Three months is a reasonable length of time for trialling any new birth control pill to be sure of the ways in which it is affecting you as some side effects will wear off after that time.

Ask yourself these questions before deciding to take Desogen (or any other contraceptive pill for that matter)

  • Are you over 35 and do you smoke? If so, you will increase the risk of having a heart attack, a stroke and blood clots if you take Desogen
  • Are you also taking of these medications? Phenylbutazone, HIV medicines like fosamprenavir, acetaminophen, indinavir, ritonavir or amprenavir -these should not be taken with Desogen
  • Are you on any seizure medications? Including primidone, felbamate, carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine? These should not be taken with Desogen
  • Are you on any antibiotics? (minocycline, rifampin, griseofulvin, amoxicillin, doxycycline) If so, please check with your doctor every pill you are popping - even if you have just decided to ’self dose’ with St. John’s Wort! This should not be taken with Desogen.
  • Do you suffer from depression, have high cholesterol, epileptic fits, diabetes, any disease of the gall bladder?
  • Do you have menstrual problems or fibrocystic breast disease?

If you answered YES to any of the above questions you should get expert medical advice before taking Desogen or any contraceptive pill.

REMEMBER neither Desogen nor any other birth control pill will protect you from AIDS and HIV or from any other sexually transmitted diseases.

How do I take Desogen?
